The College of Shanghai Lausanne Hospitality Management held its “First Lesson for Freshmen” event, and invited the senior executives of leading enterprises in the hospitality industry to give on-site lectures. Focusing on spreading patriotism and building national brands, this event aims to exhibit the reform and opening-up achievements of Shanghai and its unique charm as a world-renowned tourist city, and to cultivate management talents with solid professional skills, broad global vision, high foreign language proficiency, and international thinking mode. It has fully embodied the advanced concepts and excellent quality of national brands. J Hotel Shanghai Tower, the hotel where the event is held, is a high-end national brand hotel jointly invested by Jin Jiang International (Holdings) Co., Ltd. and related enterprises, with the largest vertical height in current world. The hotel perfectly embodies “World Standard, Chinese Culture, Shanghai Quality, and Jin Jiang Spirit”, and is representative of the construction of “Four Brands” in Shanghai.

At the “First Lesson for Freshmen” event, Michel Rochat, CEO of EHL Education Group, presented a speech by video, in which he extended his best wishes and warm congratulations to the College of Shanghai Lausanne Hospitality Management for a successful new beginning.

Professor Wang Fanghua, Distinguished Consultant at Shanghai Jiaotong University and former Dean of Antai College of Economics & Management, reinterpreted the story The Race Between Hare and Tortoise to students, telling them the importance of goal-setting and perseverance when the personal future is not clear yet. According to Professor Wang, young people should make a correct assessment of the situation and of themselves, and set proper life goals. After goal-setting, the next step is to find the most suitable path. In face of risks and challenges, students should always respect and follow the rules, and try to achieve real success under the rules. In cases where others have succeeded by taking advantages of the loopholes of rules, students should make a timely reflective judgment of the situation to find the most favorable plan. Sun Jie, CEO of Ctrip, introduced the greater accommodation business of the group to students, urging them to pursue independence and knowledge in career development, discover their gifts, embrace responsibility with passion, and achieve self-breakthroughs and life balance. Peng Lijun, General Manager of InterContinental Shanghai Ruijin, introduced his own learning and working experiences, and encouraged students to cherish precious learning opportunities and forge ahead based on a solid knowledge accumulation. He stressed that students should gear their study to practical use, seize every opportunity of research and practice, and try to promote the progress of the industry while realizing their own values. Chen Liming, Executive Director of Jin Jiang International, talked about the status and vision of the group, and encouraged students to devote themselves to the hospitality industry. President Tang also urged students to grow into the defender of ideal and faith, the explorer of innovative development, and the promoter of international exchanges. He said that we would jointly witness the development of the College of Shanghai Lausanne Hospitality Management and the growth of every student.

Industry-teaching integration: top-level design application and teaching

As a full-time undergraduate college based on Chinese-foreign cooperation between SBS and EHL, College of Shanghai Lausanne Hospitality Management takes in-depth industry-teaching integration as its basic school-running pattern. To that end, it has reached strategic cooperation intentions with Donghu Group, Jin Jiang International, Ctrip, and many leading enterprises in the industry. These cooperation relationships provide high-quality, reliable industry resources for the College of Shanghai Lausanne Hospitality Management, and help it develop its “Lausanne Pattern” and highlight its applied school-running features.

By establishing in-depth cooperation with Donghu Group, Jin Jiang International, and Ctrip, the college has carried forward its industry-teaching integration.

At the “First Lesson for Freshmen”, the College of Shanghai Lausanne Hospitality Management signed cooperation agreements with Donghu Group, Jin Jiang International, and Ctrip, which emerged as the cornerstone enterprises for the college in the development of industry-teaching integration. For the purpose of deepening industry-teaching integration, Donghu Group will focus on promoting teaching-training cooperation, and appoint three training teachers to offer three specialty courses in the first semester. Jin Jiang International will place extra emphasis on internship-training-research cooperation, build internship bases, provide hospitality management-related training courses, and cultivate management trainees. The senior executives of Jin Jiang International will take the stage as professors in management practice. The gurus of the hospitality industry will serve as lecturers in industry practice. All the resources of Jin Jiang International will be made available to the college. Ctrip will pay close attention to teaching-research cooperation, cooperate with the college in e-commerce course, big data center, and Ctrip hotel cooperation partner training projects, engage in industry white papers, index research, and other joint research efforts, and take part in the co-construction of “Ctrip Future Applied Technology Center” as a title sponsor.

Development of “Lausanne Pattern” and highlighting of applied school-running features: In future school-running operations, the college will continue to learn from the industry-teaching integration pattern of EHL in an all-round manner. Teachers with industry background will be hired to provide practical teaching based on real occupational environment, cultivate comprehensive practical operation ability in students, and develop a school-running pattern of teaching hotel (early stage)/hospitality management college (late stage) + industry-teaching integration hotel (Donghu Group). Efforts will also be made to explore the applied training modes of “practical teaching” and “in-depth school-enterprise cooperation”, offer the “dual-channel immersion” courses of “Hengshan Scholars” (academic research) + “Hotel Professionals” (practical operations), and introduce the in-depth cooperation model of “EHL + overseas enterprises & Chinese higher learning institutions + enterprises”. The purpose is to actively expand the training system composed of affiliated hospitals, training hotels, and overseas bases, and effectively promote the cross-cultural education based on global competence and the applied practical training based on industry-teaching integration in the new era.

International cooperation: gearing to frontier standards for all-round, in-depth development

The College of Shanghai Lausanne Hospitality Management actively gears to the highest standards for undergraduate talent cultivation in the hospitality industry and the service industries in the broad sense, and comprehensively introduces advanced international school-running concepts, aiming to promote all-round international cooperation in the broad fields of teacher training, talent cultivation, etc.

Teacher training cooperation: In the course of teacher training, SBS and EHL will participate in the joint recruitment and training (QLF training) of professional teachers, the co-preparation of lessons, and the cooperative training by enterprises. Meanwhile, international standards will be adopted in the global recruitment of academic experts and industry gurus. In teaching practice, SBS and EHL will jointly prepare talent cultivation plans and syllabuses for the specialties of Hospitality Management and E-commerce. EHL teachers will teach at least 1/3 of the courses of the two specialties.

Talent cultivation cooperation: The college actively gears to the highest standards for undergraduate talent cultivation in the hospitality industry and the service industries in the broad sense, and comprehensively introduces the advanced international school-running concepts, outstanding teachers, and high-quality courses of EHL and management talent cultivation modes of the service industries in the broad sense. In the course of talent cultivation, SBS and EHL will jointly take part in the interview and admission consultation of students, and introduce EHL standards in terms of talent cultivation goals and modes. The aim is to cultivate solid professional skills, broad global vision, high foreign language proficiency, and international thinking mode in students in a systematic way, and turn them into high-quality talents in the service industries in the broad sense, such as hospitality management, high-end health care management, data science application, luxury management, high-end cosmetic medicine, financial services, commercial real estate management, new media, and curation.

At the “First Lesson for Freshmen” event, in the presence of Chen Qun, Huang Yongping, Shen Wei, Wang Ping, and Istvan Kocsis, President Tang signed cooperation agreements with the representatives of Donghu Group, Jin Jiang International, and Ctrip, respectively. Wang Ping, on behalf of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, put forward three expectations for the college: First, the college should continuously adhere to the development path with applied school-running features, fully absorb the experience of the “Lausanne Pattern”, and effectively transform its curriculum design and teaching methods. By further exploring new systems and mechanisms and constructing a high-level teaching staff through talent cultivation and introduction, the college is expected to establish its training mode of high-quality applied business talents and fulfill the fundamental task of fostering character and civic virtue. Second, the college should construct an industry-teaching integration governance system, and give full play to the practical advantages of enterprises in the preparation of talent cultivation plans, the building of curriculum systems, the development of disciplinary systems, and the construction of dual-channel teaching staff. In this way, the college will encourage the in-depth participation of enterprises in the cultivation of high-quality applied business talents, and build a joint talent cultivation community based on industry-teaching integration. Third, the college should effectively increase its energy level in serving the society, fully bring into play the vital role of higher learning institutions in urban socioeconomic development, and actively live up to the requirements of Shanghai for the construction of “Four Brands”. In this way, the college will not only strengthen its project expansion and brand building efforts for high-end management talent cultivation in cultural tourism industries, but also achieve development and improvement in the process of serving the world-renowned tourist city construction of Shanghai.

Also present at the “First Lesson for Freshmen” event were the representatives of EHL Education Group and cooperative enterprises, the leaders of SBS, the teachers and students of the College of Shanghai Lausanne Hospitality Management, and the mainstream media of Shanghai.
